BMW gearboxes can follow clear fault patterns when something starts to go wrong. If your BMW is hesitating between gears, slipping under acceleration, shuddering on pull-away, showing a gearbox or transmission warning light, or producing grinding or clunking noises from the transmission, these are warning signs worth diagnosing early. Our technicians specialise in BMW gearbox repairs and will identify the fault before any work begins.

Tell us what your BMW is doing and we will point you in the right direction. Gearbox diagnostics, repairs and rebuilds all covered.
Not sure what the fault is? Describe the symptoms and we will help identify the likely next step.
* Timeframes are estimates based on typical jobs. Actual turnaround depends on the specific fault, parts availability and current workshop capacity. We confirm a firm timeframe when you book.

Service4Service Manchester carries out BMW gearbox repairs and full gearbox reconditioning across Manchester and the surrounding areas. Every job uses manufacturer-approved parts and qualified transmission technicians.
We are an independent BMW gearbox specialist, not a general garage. Gearbox and transmission repair is all we do. We work on Steptronic, ZF automatic, DCT and manual gearboxes across BMW models including 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 6 Series, 7 Series, 8 Series, X1, X2, X3, X4, X5, X6, X7, Z4.
Where a repair is not economical, we supply and fit quality reconditioned BMW gearboxes as an alternative to main dealer replacement pricing. A reconditioned unit is stripped, inspected, rebuilt to specification and tested before fitting. All reconditioned gearboxes supplied and fitted by Service4Service Manchester carry a 12-month guarantee.
We also carry out BMW clutch pack replacement and adjustment alongside gearbox work, and include a gearbox oil and fluid service as standard on all transmission jobs.
We collect and return BMW vehicles for gearbox repair from across Manchester, including Manchester city centre, Salford, Stockport, Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Trafford, Tameside, Wigan and surrounding areas. Our collection and delivery service covers all of it.

We hear this all the time from BMW owners across Manchester. Someone books in expecting a routine gearbox service, but the real reason they called is because the gearbox is already showing signs of a fault. Juddering when pulling away in traffic. Slipping between gears on the motorway. A warning light on the dash. Unusual whining or grinding noises. What they actually need is a gearbox diagnosis and repair, not a routine service.
At Service4Service Manchester, we specialise in BMW gearbox repairs, gearbox rebuilds, ZF automatic and Steptronic mechatronic repairs, Multitronic gearbox faults and Tiptronic automatic transmission diagnostics across all models. We do not carry out routine BMW servicing. Gearbox and transmission repair is what we do every day.
As part of every BMW gearbox repair or rebuild, we carry out a full transmission fluid and filter service using manufacturer-approved gearbox oils and replacement components. Clean transmission fluid is an essential part of protecting the gearbox and ensuring the repair is completed correctly.
If your BMW gearbox does not feel right, there is usually an underlying fault causing it. Early gearbox diagnostics can often prevent further internal damage and reduce the overall repair cost.
Call our BMW gearbox specialists and describe the symptoms you are experiencing. In many cases we can tell you over the phone whether your BMW is likely to need a gearbox repair, clutch pack repair, transmission rebuild, fluid service or further diagnostic testing before the vehicle even arrives with us.
We carry out all of the above as part of our gearbox repair and diagnostic work. If the fluid change resolves the issue, that is all we charge for. If the diagnostic finds something more serious, you get a fixed quote before we touch anything.
Call 01616740142When an BMW gearbox fault appears, the right diagnosis matters. A warning light, delayed gear change, judder on pull-away or loss of drive can all point to different issues within the transmission system, so we identify the cause before recommending any repair.
We work on BMW DSG and S tronic dual-clutch units, Torque Converter Automatic gearboxes, Tiptronic automatics, mechatronic faults, clutch pack issues, torque converter problems and transmission fluid-related faults across the 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3, X5 and X6 and other BMW models.

Gearbox repair is all we do. Here is what that means for you.
ZF automatic, Steptronic and DCT units are all within our daily workload. We know the failure patterns, have the right diagnostic software, and carry the parts.
Same approved parts, same quality of repair. The saving comes from our labour rates, not corners cut. Our price match guarantee covers every job.
We find the fault, give you a fixed price, and only start work when you have approved it. The £30 diagnostic fee comes off your bill if you go ahead.

Common questions from BMW owners in Manchester, answered by our technicians.
This is one of the most common complaints we hear from BMW owners. The 1 Series, 2 Series, 3 Series, 4 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, X3, X5 and X6 are models we see regularly. The judder often happens because the clutch pack, torque converter, valve body, mechatronic unit or transmission fluid condition has started to deteriorate, and smooth pull-away goes with it. It is most noticeable in slow-moving traffic, on hills or when reversing. Some owners put up with it for months assuming it is normal. It is not. Left long enough, clutch wear, valve body issues, torque converter wear and mechatronic faults can cause further internal damage. A gearbox diagnostic will confirm the fault within an hour.
We rebuild and recondition BMW gearbox units in Manchester. Most jobs are completed in one to two days*.
A gearbox warning light on an BMW typically means the mechatronic unit, clutch pack, valve body, torque converter or transmission sensor has detected a fault. The most common causes are valve body wear, mechatronic faults, low hydraulic pressure, worn clutch packs, solenoid faults, contaminated gearbox oil or a torque converter problem. In some cases the car will refuse to select gears and go into a safe or limp mode. Do not ignore a gearbox warning light. Continuing to drive with a fault can turn a repairable issue into a full rebuild or replacement.
We have specialist software to read BMW gearbox fault codes and the parts to repair ZF automatic, Steptronic and DCT units properly. A diagnostic starts from £30.
It depends on the gearbox type and the fault. A ZF automatic, Steptronic and DCT repair, valve body rebuild, clutch repair or torque converter replacement are all very different jobs in terms of parts and labour. Our prices are up to 60% less than a BMW main dealer for the same quality of work using approved parts. We quote a fixed price before we start. There are no hidden charges and the £30 diagnostic fee comes off your repair bill if you go ahead.
Call 01616740142 for a ballpark figure on your specific model and fault.
Some faults allow short journeys but most get worse quickly under load. If your BMW has a gearbox warning light, is slipping between gears on the motorway, is refusing to select drive or reverse, or is making grinding or clunking noises, you should not drive it further than necessary. Continuing to drive with an active gearbox fault almost always turns a repairable problem into a full rebuild or replacement. We offer vehicle recovery across Manchester if your car cannot be driven to us.
Repair or reconditioning is almost always cheaper than replacement. A full gearbox replacement is expensive regardless of who does it. The majority of BMW gearbox faults are repairable. Mechatronic failure, clutch wear, torque converter faults, valve body faults and fluid leaks can often be fixed without replacing the whole unit. We diagnose first, quote second, and only start work when you approve it. We will only recommend a full replacement if the unit is beyond economic repair. You will not be sold unnecessary work.
No. Under Block Exemption legislation you have the legal right to use any qualified independent specialist without voiding your BMW manufacturer's warranty. The only conditions are that approved parts are used and the technicians are qualified. We meet both requirements on every job. This applies whether your car is still under the original warranty or an extended warranty. You do not have to go to a BMW main dealer to keep your warranty intact, and you will almost certainly pay significantly less with us.
BMW gearboxes have a few common fault patterns. Mechatronic unit failure is responsible for many warning lights and gear selection problems. Clutch wear, valve body wear or torque converter faults can cause the characteristic shudder on pull-away. Solenoid and valve body faults can lead to jerky or delayed shifts. Oil contamination, low fluid level or poor fluid condition can damage multiple components at once. On automatic models, torque converter wear is a common cause of harsh shifting and shudder. Early diagnosis on all of these prevents much more expensive consequential damage.
